NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is a world leader in delivering a safe and sufficient supply of blood, as well as tissues and solid organs. Each year our donors give around two million donations of blood and 3,500 organs – saving and transforming countless lives.
Our IT helps us manage donations safely through the entire supply chain, from donation through to manufacturing, processing and transfusion/transplantation. We’re constantly seeking new ways to increase productivity and efficiency, and that means rethinking the way we use IT to deliver a better experience for donors, hospital customers, partners and staff.
Over the next four years, we’ll be working towards a simplified set of IT services, hosted in the cloud and developed iteratively to ensure they meet our changing needs – now and in the future. Your IT Services expertise will be critical to making this happen.
To be successful at this role, the ideal candidate would have a mix of 50% engineering hands on skills, 40% design (High-level design and Low-level design) skills and 10% consulting skills. The candidate would have come from an engineering background hands on with various Security technologies for several years and has moved up to providing consultation and able to conceptualize and design solutions as needed based on best practice.
The responsibilities of the role will include:
Own, manage, secure and maintain NHSBT’s various Security technologies.
Write High level and Low level designs as and when required. Contribute to other designs from a Security perspective. Review and approve documentation where needed.
Present designs to Technical Architecture Boards as needed to secure approvals.
Effectively liaise with other technical resources in NHSBT and external 3rd party managed service providers coordinating and bringing them together to drive designs and solutions.
Effectively able to communicate things well and keep senior management and program managers appraised on activities.
Manage technical queries and provide decisions to drive various designs.
Own technical issues and take them to satisfactory conclusions coordinating with the relevant parties.
Provide technical oversight over the implementations conducted by third parties.
Conduct necessary engineering work and testing of delivered solutions to secure QA and Business sign offs.
Create needed NHSBT’s and suppliers’ change control requests to deliver solutions into live service.
Identify, create and write needed transition documents and processes.
The role will require knowledge, experience and expertise in the following:
Knowledge of emerging security best practice and frameworks such as ISO 27001, NIST, GDPR etc (essential)
Knowledge of Azure and Oracle Cloud technologies and security controls (essential)
Checkpoint NG and Cisco Firepower firewalls (essential)
Cloud Network Security Groups (essential)
SSL certificates, Public key infrastructure, Certificate Authority (essential).
Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Trend Micro Deep Security and Scanmail ativirus (desirable)
Imperva Web Application firewalls (desirable)
SPLUNK SIEM (desirable)
Cisco ISE (desirable)
Windows servers, VMware, Azure infrastructure/networking (desirable)
Powershell scripting, Excel and data manipulation (desirable)
Having IT certifications such as CISSP, CSA, SANS, Checkpoint, Microsoft Azure, Oracle Cloud certifications are advantageous.
This role will require some travel to other sites as needed, so willingness to travel and a valid UK driving licence is essential.
This is a full time, permanent position. The normal working hours are full time, 37.5 hours per week. This role may also require some out of hours working during key implementations but this will be limited and with prior notice.
